Investigation of Wind-Loads Acting on Low-Aspect-Ratio Cylindrical Structures Based on a Wind Tunnel Test

The low-aspect-ratio cylindrical structures represented by oil tanks is a kind of wind sensitive structure, which prone to buckling under wind-loads. A tunnel test was conducted investigate the properties wind-loads acting on smooth cylinders with an aspect ratio AR = 0.323 and 0.875, respectively. Some parameters, such as Reynolds number (Re) turbulence intensity, were taken into account. results reveal that have Re effect, effect rises AR. main factor affecting value base pressure coefficient positive range, former increases AR, while latter decreases Moreover, due influence free end turbulence, may suppress vortex shedding, power spectrum lift essentially shows broad spectral peaks turbulence. Increasing incoming made flow round at higher state, is, supercritical regime reached smaller Re. When greater than 4.0%, little mean force cylinders.
